Prevent injury while you play
Few sports teams outside football require players to wear mouth guards, yet playing without one dramatically increases dental injuries. In one study, football players who wore sports guards had very few dental injuries, while basketball players who did not had many times more. That alone makes a sports guard worth wearing.
Who can use sports guards?
Anyone who plays a competitive or recreational sport. If there is a risk of dental injury, a sports guard reduces it. Activities where a guard is a smart choice include:
- Hockey and football
- Basketball and soccer
- Gymnastics
- Skateboarding
- Mountain biking
- And many more
Your sports guard fitting
We can usually custom-fit your sports guard in two visits. At the first, we talk about the sports you play, examine your teeth and take an impression for the lab. At the second, we fit your guard and adjust it so it is comfortable and secure.
How to wear your sports guard
Put the guard in before you start playing. If you wear removable appliances, such as a partial denture or removable braces, take them out first. If you have fixed dental work, the guard helps protect it. After playing, rinse the guard and store it in its case.
Advantages of a custom-fitted sports guard
Store-bought guards are either one-size-fits-all or “boil and bite” guards you fit yourself, and neither offers much protection. A custom guard gives you:
- A precise, comfortable fit
- Easy breathing and talking
- A guard that stays firmly in place
- Greater durability
- Better protection and fewer dental complications
