Gum reduction for a balanced smile
Are you unhappy with the shape of your gums? For some people, the gums sit so low that the teeth look shorter than they are. For others, the gum line is uneven, covering more of some teeth than others. If either sounds familiar, gum reduction can give you the gum line you would like.
How is gum reduction done?
Your dentist marks your new gum line before starting. After a local or topical anesthetic, the excess gum tissue is removed with a scalpel or a dental laser. In some cases, a small amount of bone along the front of the teeth also needs to be reshaped.
A laser seals the gum tissue as it works, which reduces bleeding and makes recovery easier than with a scalpel.
What is recovery like?
Recovery depends partly on whether a scalpel or laser is used, and it takes some time for your gums to fully heal. To help them heal:
- Rest as much as possible on the first day
- Take acetaminophen or ibuprofen for discomfort, and avoid aspirin, which can increase bleeding
- Stick to cool, soft foods that will not irritate your gums
- Follow your dentist’s instructions for brushing and flossing
- Call our office if you notice unexpected swelling or bleeding
Is gum reduction right for you?
A gummy smile can have several causes, including the position of the lip, the size of the teeth or the jaw. We examine your smile first and explain whether gum reduction alone, or a combination with other treatments such as veneers, will give you the best result.
